1973

  • Sucden is founded as Sucden (UK) Limited in London.  The firm begins life as a small brokerage arm of Sucres et Denrées with six members of staff.

  • For half a century, the name of SUCRES ET DENRÉES and that of VARSANO have been synonymous with worldwide expertise in the trading of sugar. Sucres et Denrées S.A. is a private company founded by Maurice Varsano, who ran the company until 1980 when his son Serge Varsano succeeded him. Serge Varsano controls the Sucres et Denrées Group as the major shareholder of the holding company. Since it was founded, the Sucres et Denrées Group has consistently ranked amongst the world leaders in sugar trading.


1975-76

  • Sucden expands its trading operations beyond Sugar to include Coffee and Cocoa.


1978-82

  • The firm continues to expand and introduces energy trading and becomes one of the founder members of the IPE (International Petroleum Exchange).


1982

  • The London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE) was established in 1982, following the removal of foreign exchange controls in the United Kingdom. The creation of LIFFE initially offered market participants a better means of managing their exposure to both foreign exchange and interest rate volatility. LIFFE has since developed a diverse range of financial instruments (known collectively as derivatives). Sucden becomes a founding member.

  • Sucden establishes its foreign exchange business operations.


1987

  • Sucden establishes a German branch.


1991

  • Sucden establishes a Dutch branch.


1994

  • Sucden becomes a Ring Dealing member of the London Metal Exchange (LME).

  • As a Ring Dealing member Sucden is entitled to trade in the Ring during the Ring trading sessions. We may also operate a 24 hour market by trading inter-office. All Ring Dealing members, as members of the London Clearing House, are authorised under the 2000 Financial Services and Markets Act and are members of the FSA. Ring Dealing members are Clearing members who enjoy all the privileges of membership including the right to issue client contracts and the exclusive right to trade in the Ring.


1998

  • Sucden celebrates its 25 year anniversary.


1999

  • Sucden establishes its Private Client Division.


2004

  • Sucden passes the 10 year milestone of LME membership – currently the reserve of just 12 firms.

  • Sucden establishes a new Industrial Commodities Desk to focus on business development in the Asia Pacific Region.

2007

  • Sucden Private Client Services launch SMART, the multi-product trading platform for Futures, CFDs, Stocks and Forex.
